Interworld Electronics has released the FOSTCDR and FOSTCDRI Serial to Multimode RS-232/422/485 Fibre Optic Converters. Designed for industrial and telecommunications environments, the converters can extend serial data up to 2.5 miles from their source. Both converters provide 2000V optical isolation. In addition the FOSTCDRI provides 3-way isolation and is UL approved and certified for use in Class 1 Division 2 environments. The FOSTCDR requires a 10 30 VDC power supply while the FOSTCDRI can operate from 10 48VDC making it ideal for Telco applications.

In addition to direct point-to-point connectivity, the both converters are capable of operating in a multi-drop mode. This allows one serial device to communicate with up to 31 others around a fiber optic ring. In RS-232 mode, the converters only support transmit data (TD) and receive data (RD). Handshaking signals are not passed through. In RS-422/485 mode, an Automatic Send Data Control circuit controls the RS-422/485 driver chip, eliminating the requirement for special software. Both converters are also Modbus ASCII or RTU compatible.

The FOSTCDR Series is easy to install and configure. A multi-position DIP Switch is used to set up the RS-422/485 parameters and terminal blocks are provided for connection to serial signals and power. The FOSTCDR Series provides versatile options allowing connection to any asynchronous full or half-duplex serial equipment.

Optical fibre is inherently immune to EMI/RFI interference. By replacing your existing serial communications network with optical fibre cable and the FOTCDR Series Multimode Converters you will increase your networks data integrity and security.
